The lawsuit concerned claims of crore-valued hawala transactions and tax fraud. In relation to this issue, Enforcement Directorate (ED) agents detained the Congress leader in September 2019. The following month, the Delhi High Court had granted him bail. Subsequently, Mr. Shivakumar declared his complete trust in the legal system and charged the BJP of having a political grudge. The Income Tax Department's searches on properties connected to the Congress leader and his associates in 2017 had prompted the ED's inquiry into him.
