On a BJP ticket, Soundararajan ran for parliament in 2019 from Thoothukudi in southern Tamil Nadu, but he was defeated by Kanimozhi of the DMK. Following his return to the BJP, Tamilisai Soundararajan declared, "I have conveyed my desire to run for office to my party as well. It makes me delighted to receive my membership card returned. It is the most joyous day. Both a difficult and a joyful decision had to be made. As Governor, I had access to a lot of facilities, but I left. I have not even the slightest remorse about it. Tamil Nadu will undoubtedly see a lotus unfold."
