He made these comments after the Citizenship Amendment Act went into effect earlier this month. According to Himanta Sarma, members of the Miya group must adhere to certain cultural customs and traditions in order for Assam to accept them. The Assamese Chief Minister listed restricting the marriage of young girls, prohibiting polygamy, and capping family sizes at two as some of the conditions for the Miya group to be acknowledged as indigenous in the northeastern state.
