30:39Now PlayingIn this episode of Beyond The Headline, anchor Sneha Koshy discusses how for the second consecutive year, Indian seafarers have the highest rate of abandonment worldwide, according to the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF). Approximately one-fourth of all abandoned seafarers are Indian, as reported by ITF and highlighted in The Times of India. Seafarer abandonment occurs when shipowners fail to cover repatriation costs, leave seafarers without support, or sever ties, including non-payment of wages for at least two months, as defined by the Maritime Labour Convention of 2006. Out of 1,672 abandoned seafarers, 401 are Indian.
