Slovak PM Heads to Washington To Finalize $15 billion Nuclear Deal with US, Dumps EU Roadmap

Slovakia has completed the dismantling of two Soviet-era nuclear reactors at Bohunice, clearing the way for a new $12–15 billion nuclear project likely to be awarded to U.S. firm Westinghouse. Prime Minister Robert Fico is expected to travel to Washington soon to finalise the agreement, according to journalist Szabolcs Panyi and Slovak media reports. Although the European Union co-funded the decommissioning, critics argue Brussels played a limited technical role, prompting further debate over the EU’s influence in Slovakia’s energy decisions. The U.S. embassy acknowledged ongoing talks, but noted that European Commission approval remains a hurdle.
