4:27Now PlayingClashes broke out in Tirana on Sunday, as thousands of anti-government demonstrators rallied at the call of opposition leader Sali Berisha and were met by a heavy police presence. Footage shows protesters firing flares, fireworks and throwing Molotov cocktails at Prime Minister Edi Rama's office and other state institutions, as law enforcement deployed water cannon and blocked streets to halt their advance.
Eighteen individuals were reportedly detained in the aftermath, while around six officers from the Eagle Special Force were injured and taken to the hospital. Demonstrators gathered for a nationwide movement called by Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama over corruption allegations. Political tensions in Albania escalated in December, when a special prosecution unit indicted Deputy PM Belinda Balluku for allegedly interfering in public tenders for major infrastructure projects and favouring certain companies.
