3:29Now PlayingSatellite imagery shows an Iranian strike damaged a key US AN/TPY-2 radar at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia on March 1, killing a US serviceman, according to CNN.
The radar, a critical component of the US THAAD missile defense system, is designed to track and intercept ballistic missiles and showed visible charring and structural damage in satellite images. The system is a high-value asset, with the US Missile Defense Agency listing the cost of an AN/TPY-2 antenna at $136 million in its 2025 budget.
The base has since faced multiple Iranian strikes. On March 27, an attack hit a US E-3 Sentry (AWACS) aircraft and a refuelling tanker, wounding at least 10 US service members. Satellite images provided by Airbus show extensive damage to the E-3 Sentry, with large sections of its fuselage destroyed and its radar dome detached and lying on the ground. Several vehicles were seen around the aircraft in images taken on March 29.
