3:23Now PlayingIndia on Saturday rejected reports claiming that an Iranian crude oil shipment meant for India had been diverted to China over payment issues, terming the claims “factually incorrect.” The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry emphasised that there were no payment hurdles for Iranian crude imports and noted that cargoes at sea can change destinations mid-voyage due to commercial and operational factors.
The clarification came after reports that the Aframax tanker Ping Shun, which had earlier indicated Vadinar in Gujarat as its destination, was later seen heading towards Dongying in China, according to ship-tracking firm Kpler. The cargo was expected to mark India’s first import of Iranian crude since 2019. Dismissing the claims, the ministry said reports and social media posts suggesting a diversion due to payment issues were inaccurate. It added that India sources crude from over 40 countries, with oil companies having the flexibility to choose suppliers based on commercial considerations.
