United Nations Briefs Israel, Lebanon And Sudan As Conflict Intensifies In The Middle East | Watch

The United Nations says it is working on expanding humanitarian operations in the Sudanese capital Khartoum, and beyond, “at a time when needs are skyrocketing.” Briefing journalists on Monday, U.N. spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Denise Brown is returning to Khartoum with a core team to scale up the U.N.’s presence on the ground. The move comes as “more than 1.6 million Sudanese people have also returned to Khartoum in recent months,” he said, “even as explosive remnants of war and damaged infrastructure continue to pose serious risks.” Last week, the Rapid Support Forces killed at least 10 people and injured 22 in a drone attack on a Sudanese hospital, Dujarric said.

Doctors Without Borders said the paramilitary group launched two strikes on Al-Jabalain Hospital, hitting an operating theater and maternity ward. The attack is part of ongoing drone warfare between the army and RSF, Dujarric said, adding that “medical personnel and facilities must be protected, as international humanitarian law requires.” The World Health Organization reported over 200 attacks on health care since the war began in April 2023. The nearly three-year conflict has killed more than 40,000 people, according to U.N. figures, but the actual death toll is likely higher.
