India: EAM S Jaishankar To Visit UAE Today Amid Tensions In The Middle East, What's On Agenda

External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar will be landing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) today, Saturday, marking the first trip by an Indian minister to the Gulf since the outbreak of the Iran war. Energy security in turbulent times will be at the forefront of the diplomatic agenda.

The visit runs parallel to Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri’s mission to Qatar, where India is seeking to shore up LNG supplies after Doha was forced to shut major production plants amid Hormuz disruptions. It is important to note that Qatar provides nearly 4 per cent of India’s international LNG imports.

During his visit, the external affairs minister is likely to hold a bilateral discussion with his Emirati counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed al Nahyan, apart from other senior officials. The visit came months after the UAE President, Mohamed bin Zayed al Nahyan, made a quick three-hour visit to India and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
