Israel-Hezbollah Standoff Escalates: IDF Fighter Jets Strike Southern Lebanon, Soldier Killed

Israel's fighter jets struck a southern Lebanese village Friday shortly after Israel warned the residents to leave the area. The strike occurred a little over an hour after the military told residents of Ain Qana to leave, damaging several houses. Heavy plumes of smoke rose from the site after the Israeli strike. The Israeli army had warned residents in the building.

The airstrikes and clashes intensified in southern Lebanon in recent days as Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to defeat the militant Hezbollah group. Israeli troops have been also pushing in their ground offensive reaching the entrance of the southern village of Dibbine, near the town of Marjayoun, early Friday. The latest round of violence comes as military officials from Lebanon and Israel are scheduled to meet at the Pentagon on Friday in the first direct military talks between the two countries in decades. In April, Lebanon and Israel held the first direct talks in Washington in more than three decades.
