3:53Now PlayingThe rhythmic beat of drums echoed across Beijing's Tongzhou District on Friday as dragon boat teams raced along the city's historic Grand Canal, drawing thousands of spectators for the highlight of the Dragon Boat Festival. Crews of ten dragon boat teams paddled in synchronized strokes through the canal waters for 100 and 200 meters, as residents and tourists gathered along the banks to watch the competition and take part in festival activities.
The Dragon Boat Festival, known in Chinese as Duanwu Festival, falls on June 19 this year and marks one of China's most important traditional holidays. The festival is commonly associated with the ancient poet Qu Yuan who lived more than 2,000 years ago and whose memory is commemorated through dragon boat racing and the eating of zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings. Tongzhou's Grand Canal has become a major venue for Dragon Boat Festival celebrations in Beijing in recent years.
