3:15Now PlayingTurkish comedian Deniz Goktas was arrested at Istanbul Airport on Thursday after returning from a trip abroad, over a stand-up performance that prosecutors allege contained remarks insulting Islam. The arrest comes amid an expanding crackdown on critics of Turkey’s Islamo-conservative government, with artists, journalists, musicians and opposition figures increasingly facing legal action.
In a statement, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office said Goktas was detained on July 2 as part of an investigation into the charge of “publicly insulting religious values”. The prosecutors said they had received 185 complaints about the comedian’s performance. The case centres on a stand-up show performed in Istanbul on June 1, which was uploaded to YouTube on June 24. The 90-minute video has since attracted nearly nine million views. During the performance, Goktas used satire to comment on political developments in Turkey, including references to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and jailed Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, whose arrest last year triggered mass anti-government protests.
