Footage shows Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior Iranian officials standing alongside Ghalibaf as he wept and prayed beside the coffin.
The ceremony comes ahead of several days of official funeral proceedings, set to begin on July 4 at the Imam Khomeini Prayer Hall in Tehran. Mourners are expected to continue arriving in the capital over two days to offer condolences. Iranian authorities have prepared accommodation in mosques, stadiums, parks and temporary camps as the country braces for large crowds.
A public funeral procession is planned for July 6, before ceremonies move to the holy city of Qom on July 7. The ceremonies are due to conclude in Mashhad, where Khamenei's body is expected to be laid to rest at the Imam Reza shrine on July 9.
