Amid intensifying pressure from US President Donald Trump for European allies to accelerate military spending toward a newly targeted 5% of GDP, NATO is moving aggressively to bolster its collective deterrence and industrial base. Among the major procurements unveiled are Sweden's Saab GlobalEye surveillance aircraft—set to replace the alliance's aging US-built Boeing E-3A Sentry AWACS fleet—alongside joint acquisitions of MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft for persistent maritime surveillance, and additional Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft. Rutte emphasized that 'there is no strong defense without a strong defense industry,' highlighting how these landmark agreements will transform financial pledges made at The Hague into immediate, cutting-edge military capabilities to counter real-world threats.
