6:39Now PlayingEl Salvador displayed 6.68 tonnes of cocaine on Wednesday after what authorities described as the largest drug seizure in the country's history. Footage released by Salvadoran authorities shows navy personnel moving rectangular packages wrapped in black plastic after the drugs were seized in the Pacific Ocean.
Security Minister Gustavo Villatoro said the cocaine had an estimated street value of $167 million and represented a major blow to international trafficking networks. "These more than 6.6 tonnes would have amounted to more than 20 million doses on the streets of destination cities - doses that we have seized, and that will no longer destroy lives, tear families apart, fuel theft to buy this poison, or cause deaths in the fight to control the territories where it is sold," he said.
Authorities said the seizure followed two naval operations on June 18, more than 600 nautical miles off El Salvador's coast. Six suspected traffickers from Colombia and Ecuador were arrested after two low-profile vessels were intercepted.
