KEELUNG, Taiwan — East Asia is bracing for what could be the most destructive tropical storm in decades as Super Typhoon Bavi, a monstrous storm system spanning nearly 1,000 kilometers in width—roughly the size of France—churns across the Western Pacific toward Taiwan, Japan's southernmost islands, and mainland China. Packing maximum sustained winds of 184 km/h and violent gusts up to 252 km/h, the storm is on a direct northwest trajectory that will see it batter Japan’s Sakishima Islands in Okinawa Prefecture before skirting just north of Taiwan’s port city of Keelung and Yilan County. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration has warned of 'destructive' winds and up to one meter of torrential rainfall in northern mountainous areas, prompting President Lai Ching-te to issue urgent safety alerts and mobilize 29,000 military personnel. After grazing Taiwan, the massive storm is forecast to make a double landfall along China's southeastern coast in Fujian or Zhejiang provinces by Saturday night, July 11, 2026. This comes as China upgrades its emergency response to Level III, still reeling from the devastation of Typhoon Maysak which claimed 39 lives earlier this week. Meteorological experts warn that El Niño-fueled sea temperatures have supercharged Bavi, and its torrential rain band is projected to stretch thousands of kilometers inland, threatening severe flooding as far north as Beijing.
