3:42Now PlayingMarco Rubio has emerged as one of the Trump administration’s most protected operators because the hardest diplomatic problems have been handed to others. That has let him focus on targets that are politically useful, but far less dangerous than the wars in Ukraine and Iran.
In a Washington Post column, Rubio has spent recent weeks attacking the International Criminal Court, Cuba and left-wing activists. The strategy is clear. These are fights that sound tough at home and are unlikely to trigger serious retaliation abroad. His criticism of the ICC rests on a worst-case scenario that is highly unlikely. He has warned that U.S. soldiers, police officers, Border Patrol agents and elected leaders could one day be dragged before foreign judges, convicted under laws Americans do not control and sent to prison far from home.
