3:54Now PlayingHungary has shut down its only nuclear power plant for the first time since it began operations in 1982 after record-low levels on the Danube River disrupted the facility’s cooling system. Prime Minister Peter Magyar said the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which supplies nearly half of Hungary’s electricity, was forced offline as river levels fell below critical limits. The shutdown comes amid a severe drought and heatwave affecting parts of Europe, disrupting energy production, shipping, agriculture and industry. Authorities warn Hungary could face increased pressure on its power supply as neighbouring Slovakia monitors the situation and prepares to assist if required.
