3:00Now PlayingJapan and the United States have confirmed a rare coordinated intervention in the foreign exchange market to support the Japanese yen after the currency weakened to its lowest level in around four decades against the US dollar. Japan's Finance Ministry said on Monday that it carried out a joint yen-buying operation with the US Treasury on Friday to counter what it described as excessive volatility in the currency market. The ministry also signalled that further coordinated interventions remain an option if market conditions warrant.
Tokyo said it "will not hesitate to conduct further coordinated interventions in the future" and remains in close communication with the US Treasury. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama also said Japan "remains attentive and in close communication with counterparts at U.S. Treasury." The ministry also announced plans to use the Federal Reserve's Foreign and International Monetary Authorities (FIMA) repo facility, which allows eligible foreign central banks and monetary authorities to obtain short-term US dollars by temporarily exchanging US Treasury securities.
