Speaking at Cali's Pichincha Battalion on Friday, De la Espriella said Colombia would join US President Donald Trump's Shield of the Americas, a coalition built around intelligence sharing and joint action against organised crime and drug trafficking. The new president also promised an official list of 'narco-terrorist groups' and plans for 'mega-prisons' to hold those his government considers the 'greatest threat' to national security.
The hardline message marks a sharp break with former president Gustavo Petro's policy of pursuing negotiations with armed groups. De la Espriella has ordered the security forces to confront criminal organisations and pledged to eradicate illicit coca crops, including through aerial spraying.
