Aug 11, 20268:12Now PlayingThe European Commission has stepped into an escalating migration row between Italy and Spain, after the two EU allies imposed tit-for-tat border checks on travellers following the Ceuta migration crisis.
Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier said on Tuesday that Brussels had been in regular contact with both governments, with Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner speaking to the Spanish and Italian interior ministers over the dispute. "The Commission explained to the ministers the underlying legal framework under Schengen, and specifically it really underlined the progress made in tackling illegal migration and how trust between member states is really a most valuable currency," he said.
"Both ministers actually publicly confirmed that the internal controls are temporary," he added. Italy imposed its controls first, targeting non-EU nationals arriving from Spain by air and sea. Madrid rejected Rome's justification and called for the measures to be withdrawn. When Italy refused, Spain responded with its own checks on arrivals from Italy.
