The UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada and Norway called the move unacceptable, warning it could undermine the territorial continuity needed for a future Palestinian state. E1, located between East Jerusalem and Ma’ale Adumim, covers roughly 12 square kilometres and has long been a diplomatic flashpoint. The countries also urged private companies not to participate in the tenders and called for their withdrawal. Israel disputes international criticism of its settlements and maintains historical and security claims to the territory.
