9:11Now PlayingTens of thousands of residents in northwest Indiana remain without electricity nine days after a deadly August 11 storm devastated the region. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. said about 63,500 customers were still without power Thursday, with most outages concentrated in Lake County. In Gary, schools remain closed and residents are discarding spoiled food, seeking hot meals and finding places to charge phones. Some areas may not regain power until Tuesday. Local businesses have also been forced to close, while community groups are distributing food, diapers and other essentials. Residents say prolonged outages are worsening financial and emotional stress across already vulnerable neighborhoods.
