3:42Now PlayingFirefighters and local residents battled remaining hotspots on Saturday after a wildfire swept through Serbia’s Deliblato Sands nature reserve, affecting more than 3,500 hectares of protected land and threatening nearby settlements. Authorities said no deaths had been reported, while an emergency situation was declared in part of Bela Crkva municipality and residents of nearby Trujino were evacuated. Serbia deployed professional and volunteer firefighters, forestry workers and emergency personnel, while a Russian Il-76 firefighting aircraft joined the operation. Under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, helicopters from the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia, along with ground teams from Germany and Romania, were also sent to help contain the blaze. The Deliblato Sands reserve covers about 35,000 hectares and contains sand-steppe, forest and wetland ecosystems.
