In the Rose Garden of the White House, Trump announced blanket tariffs on nearly all US trade partners, explicitly targeting China and the European Union. Calling it an "economic emergency," Trump blamed former presidents (of which he is one) for the current "calamity." He went even further with his rhetoric, however, exclaiming that “our country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered” by others.
As @bbcnews notes, this "is the biggest upheaval of the international trade order since the aftermath of World War Two." And as @apnews reports: "It kickstarts what could be a painful transition for many Americans as middle-class essentials such as housing, autos and clothing are expected to become more costly, while disrupting the alliances built to ensure peace and economic stability."
While the Trump administration charges down the path of no return, Americans could see the prices of everything from cars to homes to groceries skyrocket.
