This video from Living Ironically in Europe @LivingIronicallyinEurope explores the multi-layered historical, political, and cultural friction between Turks and Arabs, tracing its origins back to the early Arab caliphates and centuries of subsequent Ottoman dominance. The modern rift solidified during World War I with the Great Arab Revolt, an event that Arabs viewed as a necessary fight for liberation but Turks historically remembered as a deep betrayal. This division was intentionally widened under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s secularizing reforms, which actively distanced Turkey's national identity from Arab culture and institutionalized negative stereotypes. In the 21st century, geopolitical tensions re-emerged due to President Erdogan's regional interventions and backing of the Muslim Brotherhood, while the strain of hosting over three million Syrian refugees has recently inflamed anti-Arab xenophobia within Turkey. However, despite severe political wounds and government posturing, ordinary citizens share a complex relationship heavily influenced by Turkish soft power, particularly through the massive popularity of Turkish soap operas across the Arab world.
