Chicago recorded 130 murders from January through April 2026, an increase of more than 8 percent over the same period in 2025, according to Chicago Police Department data. Shootings rose from 399 to 421 over the same span, and officer shootings climbed 43 percent year over year.
Officer John Bartholomew was shot and killed at Swedish Hospital on April 25; his partner, Nelson Crespo, was hospitalized in critical condition. Suspect Alfonso Talley was charged with 20 felonies including murder.
A series of mass shootings followed through the summer, including a June 5 shooting in Back of the Yards, a Juneteenth shooting at 95th and Princeton that injured 13, and a weekend incident leaving 41 shot and three dead. A University of Chicago poll from the Mansueto Institute showed Mayor Brandon Johnson's job approval at 23 percent, with only 13 percent of Chicagoans wanting him to seek reelection.
