"NORTH MIAMI, Fla. -- Two bandits wearing nylon stockings over their heads burst into a jewelry warehouse, tied up the owner and two employees and 'got away clean' with $9-million in gold, police said today.
FBI spokesman Chris Mazzella said the owner and two employees of Golden Door Jewelry Creations were tied with tape and gagged by the men, who fled with 900 pounds of gold bars, spools, chains and jewelry.
'They got away clean,' said Dade County police Sgt. William McArthur.
The armed robbers barged into the warehouse by a side entrance about 6:15 p.m. EST Thursday during a severe thunderstorm, Mazzella said.
Owner Shaul Crediniosu, 59, and two of his employees, Amir Michan, 24, and Alex Salamow, 49, 'were doing some work after hours' at the time the bandits struck.
Authorities said the door the bandits used was unlocked when they entered.
The men made Crediniosu open a safe, then threw a shirt over his head and bound him and his employees with tape, police said.
'We're thanking God right now that we're alive,' said one of the employees.
Police said the dollar value of $9 million tops a robbery of $8 million worth of gold and silver from a warehouse in Little River in March 1980.
Because the owner and the employees were bound, they were unable to observe the vehicle the men fled in, police said.
Police were notified of the heist about half hour after it occurred when one of the employees broke loose and called officers.
'They just worked the tape loose -- one of the victims did -- and he freed the others,' Ader said.
The FBI was later called into the investigation because of the large amount of money involved.
'The only thing I can say is that we are investigating and it was approximately a $7 to $9 million heist in gold,' said FBI agent Don Perusi. He said that no arrests had been made.
Police said that Golden Door refined, melted and sold gold, and manufactured gold jewelry."
