Founder Naz Perez, 29, started the organization in Los Angeles, California, after spiraling into a post-breakup depression — and realizing there wasn't an outlet for people in her position. "The automatic reflex of someone in your life is to tell you, 'Okay, well, let's get out. You gotta move on!'" she said.
Perez now runs hour-long meetings attended by grieving people of all ages and backgrounds. While it's not a 12-step program, Heartbroken Anonymous does have rules: No shoes and no advice. Participants sit in a circle on the floor and listen to each other speak. "Where in life have you seen a 15-year-old sit next to a 50-year-old and talk about what's really hurting them?" she said.
