1:14Now PlayingVenezuelan President Nicolas Maduro hailed a major prisoner swap with the United States on Wednesday (December 20), as he personally welcomed ally Alex Saab, who was facing U.S. bribery charges, back to Caracas following his release by the U.S. government.
In exchange, Venezuela freed 30 U.S. and domestic prisoners, and, according to the U.S., agreed to free and fair elections next year.
In a speech, Maduro said the swap marked a step toward a new era of diplomatic relations with the United States. “Hopefully, the way will be found for a process of respect, equal treatment and understanding between the United States of America and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. Today a step has been taken that will hopefully contribute to that path.”
U.S. prosecutors had accused Saab, a Colombian businessman, of siphoning off some $350 million from Venezuela via the U.S. in a scheme that involved bribing Venezuelan government officials. Saab, who denies wrongdoing, had been held in federal jail in Miami awaiting trial since October 2021.
Upon his return to Caracas, Saab thanked the Venezuelan government for not abandoning him and said he was proud to serve the country.
