18:57Now PlayingThe highest echelons of American and Russian foreign policy officials met in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to hammer out possibilities for an end to Moscow’s nearly three-year war on Ukraine — but without any representatives for Kyiv.
The head of Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev, one of Moscow’s negotiators, told CNN that the high-stakes four and a half hour meeting was “positive.”
The US State Department said both sides agreed to establishing a “consultation mechanism” to normalize US-Russian diplomatic relations, appointing “high-level teams” to kickstart talks on ending the Russia-Ukraine war, and laying the groundwork for future talks on geopolitical and economic interests once the war comes to a close.
The teams also agreed to keep the talks moving in an efficient manner.
“President Trump wants to stop the killing; the United States wants peace and is using its strength in the world to bring countries together. President Trump is the only leader in the world who can get Ukraine and Russia to agree to that,” State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement.
Dmitriev told reporters that it was too early to talk of specific agreements made between US and Russia but that the two sides started listening to each other and establishing respect.
In photos of the gathering, national security adviser Mike Waltz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff sat with stoic expressions across the table from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Kremlin foreign policy advisor Yuri Ushakov, as well as Dmitriev.
Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud and National Security Advisor Mosaad bin Mohammad al-Aiban sat between the two delegations as they hosted the historic event.
