0:55Now PlayingVideo showing a fight at a varsity girls basketball game on Feb. 7 between Elmont High School and Kennedy High School in the Bellmore-Merrick district has become the straw that apparently broke the camel’s back for Elmont parents, who say the incident is indicative of a long history of racist behavior against their kids, including being called racial slurs and spit on. In the clip, the Kennedy girl, who is white, appears to hit the Elmont girl, who is black, first, but only the Elmont girl was kicked out of the game. As a result, Elmont parents recently held a town hall to ask local sports officials to not schedule games between their district and schools in Bellmore-Merrick School District. “We have trusted our district to help look over our kids, but I don’t think that they have, because they keep doing things to put a Band-Aid to a gunshot wound.” - Elmont father, Jon Johnson. Patrick Pizzarelli, Section VIII director, told the Post they will make a decision on scheduling in the coming months.
