0:40Now PlayingHawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupted again on Sunday, May 25, firing a lava fountain high into the air as it entered Episode 23 of its eruptive phase.
Footage captured by Justin Hirako shows the impressive spectacle as onlookers watch, with both day and night shots.
“Holy moly. The fountain almost couldn’t fit in my frame. Look at the south vent go too! This is the most vigorous and highest fountaining episode yet, in my opinion!” Hirako wrote.
He could well be right. The USGS noted similar heights were reached back in March, during episode 15; however, the height reached in the latest episode was potentially even higher.
Episode 23 ended at 10:25 pm local time on Sunday, the USGS said.
