4:41Now PlayingAbout 300 migrants departed from Tapachula, in southern Mexico, en route to Monterrey, in the country’s northeast, on Wednesday, August 6.
According to news reports, the caravan included migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Africa, and Central America.
The cross-country journey began a day after migrant rights activist Luis Garcia Villagran was arrested in Tapachula “for alleged crimes related to his work with migrants,” the Associated Press reported.
Footage recorded by Juan Manuel Perez Blanco shows the migrant caravan walking through Tapachula, in Mexico’s Chiapas state, while holding signs reading, “Exodo Justicia” (Exodus of Justice) and “Migrar no es crimen” (“Migrating is not a crime”).
Contrary to past caravans, migrants departing on Wednesday were reportedly heading to Monterrey, in Mexico’s Nuevo Leon state, following an executive order issued by US President Donald Trump and aiming to prevent migrants from requesting asylum at the US border.
A federal judge in Washington, DC, blocked the executive order on July 2, after a court found that neither “the constitution nor federal immigration law” allow the president to deny entry to people crossing the border to apply for asylum, according to reports.
