2:26Now PlayingYeraldine Bonilla Valverde was sworn in by the Sinaloa state congress as acting governor after lawmakers approved Governor Rubén Rocha Moya’s request for a leave of absence of more than 30 days. Bonilla, previously the state’s secretary general of government, was appointed after her nomination was backed by the legislature. In her first remarks, she rejected what she described as false and malicious accusations and said she would respond if required by Mexican authorities. The transition comes amid U.S. allegations linking Rocha and members of his administration to alleged cartel connections, which he has denied, saying his leave was meant to protect the integrity of his office. Bonilla is the first woman to serve as head of Sinaloa’s executive branch.
