PM TO VISIT STRASBOURG

The Armenian PM, Nikol Pashinyan, will pay a working visit to Strasbourg, France—to the Council of Europe (CoE).

The PM on Friday will deliver speech at the PACE plenary session. Pashinyan will meet with CoE Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland, PACE President Liliane Maury Pasquier, and CoE Venice Commission President Gianni Buquicchio. In addition, Pashinyan and Jagland will make a statement for mass media.

The PM, the CoE Secretary General, and the PACE President will officially open—at the CoE headquarters—the photo exhibition, entitled “The Velvet Revolution of Armenia.”

Nikol Pashinyan is expected to meet also with representatives of the Armenian community of Strasbourg.

EU EMBASSIES ON ARMENIA TRANSGENDER PERSON

A statement issued on behalf of the EU delegation and the EU member states embassies resident in Armenia has reflected on transgender person Lilit Martirosyan’s recent speech during the National Assembly hearings, and the respective developments.

According to the statement, hate speech, including death threats directed at Ms. Lilit Martirosyan, her colleagues and the LGBTI community as a whole represent the latest in this worrying trend and amount to discrimination prohibited under the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms to which Armenia is party and which is reflected in the Armenian Constitution.

The EU calls on all in Armenia who promote and believe in the universality of human rights to condemn hate speech and on law enforcement agencies to take urgent steps to guarantee the physical safety of Armenian citizens and to investigate allegations against those suspected of perpetrating hate crimes, the statement noted.

EX-POLICE CHIEF INTERROGATED

Armenian’s former police chief Vladimir Gasparyan has been interrogated as a witness during the preliminary investigation in the case of anti-competitive practices.

The Special Investigation Service refused to answer the question on the procedural status of Vladimir Gasparyan in the case, stating that the Service can’t provide other details based on the interests of the preliminary investigation of the criminal case.

The Armenian Investigative Committee has obtained data in the criminal case under investigation in relation to the implementation of anti-corruptive practices and that in January and February 2012 Gasparyan using his official position and powers contrary to the interests of his service, promised to interfere and help former owner of King Delux to solve problems with passenger transportation, if he supports the Republican Party of Armenia in the parliamentary elections.

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RESOLUTION INTRODUCED

Congressmen Adam Schiff and Gus Bilirakis were joined by over 70 of their House of Representatives’ colleagues in introducing a new Armenian Genocide Resolution.

The resolution is aimed at establishing, as a matter of US policy, the rejection of Armenian Genocide denial, ongoing official US government recognition and remembrance of this crime, and the importance of education about the Armenian Genocide in preventing modern day atrocities.

ARMENIA SANCTIONS CITIZEN’S DAY

The Armenian National Assembly on Tuesday adopted several laws in the second reading.

A total of 97 MPs voted for, 3 others—against, and 6 lawmakers abstained in the bill on making addenda to the law on national holidays and memorial days, and whereby the last Saturday of April shall be marked in Armenia as “Citizen’s Day.”

Citizen’s Day, which aims to emphasize the meaning of the Armenian velvet revolution, will be celebrated on the last Saturday of April.
