U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Ted Cruz introduced Armenian Genocide legislation Tuesday reaffirming proper U.S. recognition and remembrance of this crime and rejecting U.S. complicity in its denial.
Senators Menendez and Cruz were joined as sponsors by 14 Senate colleagues.
“As we near the anniversary of Armenian Remembrance Day, one of the darkest events in human history, I am proud to lead this effort to formally recognize the Armenian Genocide on behalf of the U.S. Congress. The Armenian genocide is a historical fact and not up for debate,” said Senator Menendez.
The Armenian Foreign Ministry responded to the concerns over discussions taking place in public life of Armenia.
The government fully adheres to its commitments to protect and promote human rights. The Armenian MFA called on international partners to demonstrate “more respect and sensitivity towards the Armenian society and refrain from undue engagement in the public debate, even if they disagree with its tonality.”
“We would like to remind that the principle of public morality is a part of international commitments on human rights and can not be ignored,” the statement reads.
TURKEY SUMMONS ITALY AMBASSADOR
The Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned the Italian ambassador to Ankara Massimo Gaiani, following a motion submitted to the Italian parliament to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
It should be noted that the Chamber of Deputies of Italy on Tuesday began discussing a document recognizing the Armenian Genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire. The discussion will continue during the Wednesday session.
Armenian citizen has been convicted for repeating the illegal crossing of the Russian state border.
In April last year, the man received a new passport with changed data. Then he drove by car from the territory of Belarus to Russia through a control point in the Bryansk region.
The audit showed that the man has a criminal record for illegally crossing the Russian State Border.
The court sentenced the defendant to a year in prison with a sentence being served in a penal colony.
Seventy Armenian women have been arrested within the scope of the fight against prostitution in the Turkish city of Hopa (Hamshen).
According to the Turkish IHA agency, police found out that most of the arrested women were foreigners from the Russian Federation, Armenia, Uzbekistan, Georgia and other countries.
Out of the arrestees, 40 were exiled, while the others are being interrogated.
