4:10Now PlayingIn response to a rash of armed robberies, Washington D.C.'s mayor has introduced a tough-on-crime policy, which enforces an old law prohibiting mask-wearing during a crime, despite its limited deterrent effect.
The city is facing a significant increase in crime over the past year, with violent crime up 41%, homicides up 34%, robberies up 70% and motor vehicle thefts up 102%.
The proposal also includes measures to create drug-free zones, enable officers to use body cameras for reporting and crack down on organized retail theft rings. Ralph Godbee, former chief of police in Detroit with 25 years of experience on the force, joins “On Balance” and says that the crime reduction strategy is underwhelming.
