10:56Now PlayingA self-proclaimed Palestinian joined my live. His dad was born in Syria. His mom was born in Jordan. He was born in Arizona. He lives in California. I asked him one question: do you know who Yasser Arafat was?
He said no. Yasser Arafat, the founder of the PLO, the face of Palestinian nationalism for decades, one of the most recognized political figures of the 20th century and the man claiming Palestinian identity had never heard of him. I told him: you're the worst Palestinian I've ever met.
I asked him where Rafah is. He said it's near Gaza. Rafah is in Gaza. Not near it. Inside it. He had never been there. He went to the region once when he was six and couldn't tell me where he even went.
I asked him what makes him Palestinian. He said his blood. I told him: there's no such thing as Palestinian blood. Give a scientist your DNA and they'll tell you you're Levantine or Arab. They cannot tell you you're Palestinian. Palestinian was politicized as an identity in 1964 by Yasser Arafat, the man he'd never heard of, with the creation of the PLO.
His grandparents would never have called themselves Palestinian under the Ottoman Empire or the British Mandate. They would have called themselves Arabs. Partition Plan 181, the Arab Legion's own founding documents, voted on November 29th, 1947, never once uses the word Palestinian. They called themselves Arabs. Haj Amin al-Husseini never called them Palestinians. Constantine Zorich, the man who coined the term Nakba, never called them Palestinians.
Palestinianism is trans-ethnicity. It's an ideology. You can call yourself Palestinian, but you can't force me to call you one when the history doesn't support it. He eventually admitted he doesn't even have Palestinian citizenship. So what is he? An Arab from Arizona.
