22:48Now PlayingI debate a group of pro-Palestinian guys over Israel, Gaza, Palestinian statehood and the history of the region.
Early in the conversation, one of them says Israel does not exist. I ask who is attacking Gaza, and he answers Israel. From there, I challenge the historical claim by bringing up the Merneptah Stele and asking when Palestine existed as a sovereign state.
The debate then moves into Gaza. I challenge claims of ethnic cleansing and eradication, ask what percentage of Gaza has been killed, and push them on civilian casualties, human shields, urban warfare and Hamas rocket attacks. When one speaker estimates 3%, he later walks back his use of the word “eradication.”
We also argue over humanitarian aid, the Gaza blockade, a one-state versus two-state solution, whether Jews live in Palestinian-controlled territories, Arabs living inside Israel, and the 1929 Hebron massacre.
The final section turns toward Islam and a personal family story connected to the conflict.
Watch the full conversation and decide which arguments hold up when we start testing the historical claims directly.
