Over two dozen killed in American Airlines passenger jet collision with U.S. Army helicopter

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says both aircraft – the American Airlines regional jet and Army Black Hawk helicopter – ended up in the Potomac River after they collided mid-air at a low altitude. The American jet, operated by PSA Airlines, was flying from south to north and lining up to land at DCA when it hit Black Hawk which was flying from north to south.⁠

John Donnelly, the chief of Washington D.C.’s Fire and EMS, says the first alert came in at 8:48pm and they arrived ten minutes later. He said there are 300 responders working on-scene and described it as a “highly complex operation.” He said the conditions are “extremely rough” and said the cold and windy conditions are making it difficult.
