In Paris, where the vast majority of buildings and homes do not have air-conditioning, temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s this week. France had its hottest June on record this year and recorded some 2,000 excess deaths caused by the extreme heat. That's an increase of 30%. Deaths rose by 62% in the Paris region.
Scientists say Europe is heating faster than any other continent, partly due to melting glaciers and the changing atmospheric and ocean currents surrounding the continent.
