1:03Now PlayingWhile cannibalism is relatively common in the animal kingdom, it's extremely common in the water—around 90% of aquatic species will consume their own kind at some stage of their life cycles. Whilst in Costa Rica on the shoot for Blue Planet II, we observed one particularly brutal example of this on the remote island of Cocos. Located approximately 550km from the mainland, Isla del Cocos was declared a national park in the 1970s and is considered one of the best dive spots in the world. Little is known about this gory springtime ritual, beyond the fact that millions of crabs show up "seemingly out of nowhere," and consume each other voraciously.
