On the way back to the surface, the team encountered something unexpected: a Dana Octopus Squid, one of the largest bioluminescent predators in the deep sea, moving directly toward the vehicle with its photophores lit.
This is a rare look at one of the ocean's most elusive animals: how it uses bioluminescence, why it behaves the way it does, and what a sighting like this tells scientists about life in the deep waters of the Indian Ocean.
