At a recent press conference, GOP lawmakers criticized Democratic votes against proposed legislation aimed at tightening eligibility rules and increasing oversight of government assistance programs. Republican leaders argued that hundreds of billions of dollars may have been lost to fraud and waste, and called for stronger accountability measures to recover those funds.
House Whip Tom Emmer and other Republican officials pointed to oversight findings and state-level investigations they say reveal systemic failures in fraud prevention, including allegations of whistleblower retaliation and inadequate enforcement. They argue that Democrat-led administrations have failed to act decisively on known vulnerabilities.
