A prominent centrist Democrat during her tenure in the Senate from 2013 to 2019, Heitkamp was the first woman to serve as United States Senator from North Dakota. Prior to becoming a Senator, Heitkamp served as North Dakota's Attorney General for 8 years and had a successful business career. She now leads the One Country Project, which aims to re-engage rural voters with the Democratic Party.
