Temer served as Brazil’s President until January, having assumed office following the impeachment and removal of his predecessor, Dilma Rousseff, in 2016. As President, he opened the Rio 2016 Olympics and pursued pro-market policies aimed at lifting the Brazilian economy out of recession. While in office, he faced numerous impeachment attempts, and did not seek re-election in 2018.
