Michael Gove’s infamous quip during the Brexit referendum summed up the mood of many who felt disenfranchised by seemingly endless doomsday economic forecasts that never come to fruition. The conversation surrounding the role of experts in decision making has once more been thrust to the forefront of public debate as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Have the so-called experts lost their credibility and the people’s confidence, or should we look to the technocrats, not the politicians, to lead us out of this crisis and into the coming decade?
