In this video, I’ll share candidly what I spend in a week as a 44-year-old mom in Silicon Valley. Since my husband and I have combined finances, this is actually what we spend in a week as parents.
I’m including a weekly average of our regular bills to give you an idea of how much money I realistically spend in a week.
Money is such a taboo subject in many families and social circles (and a source of shame for many people) so I thought it would be worthwhile for this week’s video to share openly about what I spend in a week as a working mom.
Even though it feels vulnerable for me, I always encourage people to focus on “progress, not perfection,” so I’m willing to take one for the team and share my imperfect journey with you so we can both learn from the experience.
Because we don’t have a mortgage, our cost of living in Silicon Valley is uncommonly low.
In terms of what we spend as parents, our biggest single expense is child care.
In terms of what I spend in a week as a working mom, we probably spend more money on restaurants than we really need to.
But we’re also doing some things well, like contributing to my Roth IRA and to our toddler’s 529 Plan every month.
